Boniface Mwangi wrote:
“I was tagged on quoted tweet last week by @JoelMbirika and l shared it with @HakiAfrica’s director @husskhalid. Khalid requested I accompany him to Yala today. I’m going to do a short thread of what we saw in River Yala and Yala Sub-County Hospital mortuary #RiverYalaBodies.
“Since July 2021 Okero kite has removed 31 bodies from River Yala. On 10th October 2021
Okero retrieved 10 bodies. Each of the 10 bodies were in individual sacks, and in his own words, “each body was neatly packed and sealed like a parcel.” @HakiAfrica @husskhalid. (Read More Here).
“On 20th October 2021, Yala Mortuary buried 9 unidentified bodies to create space in the morgue. Since then, the hospital receives atleast five bodies from River Yala every month. We visited the mortuary with @husskhalid @HakiAfrica and what we saw shocked us. #RiverYalaBodies.
“At Yala mortuary we saw 21 bodies listed as “unknown men.” Most of them bore marks of torture, tied with ropes, polythene bags on their heads and some had deep cuts. The bodies are decomposing fast and it’s likely they will be buried in a mass grave very soon. #RiverYalaBodies.
“Okero told us there are still many bodies rotting on River Yala. We didn’t believe him but agreed to follow him to the River. In a span of minutes, he had spotted and shown us two bodies. The whole scene was sickening. We told him we had seen enough. @HakiAfrica #RiverYalaBodies.
“Okero and the locals said the bodies are brought from different areas and dumped on the river. Two vehicles a Probox and a double cabin, have been spotted disposing bodies into River Yala. Boda Boda riders, and children going to school have seen those cars early in the morning.
“Sometimes police pay Okero to remove bodies from the River Yala. Okero has given us images of every single body he has removed from River Yala, they’re too graphic to share. He has documented the #RiverYalaBodies. This past week he removed three bodies, two of them of Somali origin.
“If you have a missing person and you think they might be dead, check at Yala Sub-County Hospital Mortuary. Your loved one might be one of the bodies that will be disposed soon if not claimed. Lest you forget, Kenya is a criminal state..
“Finally, I want to salute Hussein Khalid for his courage and consistency in promoting the rule of law. @HakiAfrica fights for all equally, including the Kenya police who don’t like him much. Human life is sacred and people shouldn’t be murdered like beasts. #RiverYalaBodies.

“Okero’s Grandpa and his Dad taught him how to retrieve bodies. His family’s lineage is known for the skills of retrieving bodies from the River. He was used to retrieving suicide or accidental drowning bodies. Now it’s murdered humans dumped in the river like waste garbage.”
