Armed police backed by 10 bulletproof vehicles and four helicopters raided Complexo do Alemao yesterday.
An hours-long shootout took place between officers and gangsters accused of robbing cargo vehicles.
Police say they were ‘violently attacked’ and defended their actions which saw 18 killed.
