A teen in the Bronx was shot and killed by an off-duty corrections officer after firing on the officer with an illegal air rifle, authorities say. This is the same rifle that you may have seen on TikTok, the ‘Orbeez Challenge.” It’s an air rifle that shoots out soft gel balls.
Dion Middleton, 45, was arrested and hit with murder charges for the death of Raymond Chaluisant, 18, after the teen allegedly fired on him from a car on Thursday with an air rifle using Orbeez soft gel balls.
Raymond died after being shot while traveling in the passenger seat of a silver Acura SUV. A bloody handprint could be seen on its door afterwards.
The teenager was hit in the chin, leaving his remains too disfigured to identify.
What’s crazy about this is that Dion apparently drove to work immediately afterwards and didn’t report the shooting to any of his superiors. He wasn’t aware he had killed someone.
His lawyer said Dion feared his life was in danger. He told the police he fired a single bullet after being hit in the back with what felt like glass shards or bullet fragments.
He told police he turned and saw a passenger in a silver vehicle make a gesture with his hand before the window began to roll up and the car began to turn near Morris Avenue. Officer Dion said he fired his gun.
“I felt threatened, I took my weapon, I shot,” he told the police.
It’s important to note that those air rifles, Orbeez guns, are illegal in New York City.
Dion was charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
