According to Daily Mail, Walmart has been ordered to pay $4.4million to a man their employees harassed over a $35.
According to the lawsuit, in 2020, an employee spied on Michael Magnum while he shopped for a lightbulb, ordered him to leave, threatened to smash his face and called police when he refused.
The lawsuit served as a test of a recently passed state law allowing lawsuits against anyone who improperly calls law enforcement with the intent to discriminate, his lawyers said.
It’s important to note that deputies at the time refused to arrest or engage with Magnum as he shopped because the Walmart employee often made false reports to police. Despite this encounter, Walmart kept the employee for a few more months.
On Friday, August 19, 2022, a Multnomah County jury awarded Dovey $400,000 in non-economic damages and $4 million in punitive damages against Walmart.
