“It’s about the journey we’ve all been on over the last few years and celebrating what’s next,” Baby said in a press release. “When I started in music in 2017, I went all in on a dream that brought me to where I am now, and that’s what I want fans to feel when they hear the song. I hope it makes you feel like you’re walking out onto the pitch at the World Cup making moves toward your own dreams, whatever that means to you.”
Released Friday, the song—which is among the eight singles set to be featured as part of the official FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 soundtrack—samples the duo’s still-ubiquitous 1985 track “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” In a statement, Baby called this release a “special one” for him and also shouted out Budweiser, which has been designated as the “official beer” of the FIFA World Cup.
Lil Baby is also slated to release eight other versions of the song in collaboration with other musicians from different countries around the world in preparation for the tournament. The FIFA World Cup in Qatar will take place from November 20 until December 18, 2022.
The single comes on the heels of the the Grammy Award winning star announcing that his third studio album It’s Only Me is set to drop on October 14 via Motown.
This winter the FIFA World Cup 2022 will take place in Qatar amid a backdrop of complaints over everything from human rights to fixture congestion. Somehow in the middle of the soccer madness is Lil Baby, who has recorded the official anthem of the tournament, “The World Is Yours To Take.” The inspiration song, designed to convince soccer players like Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe that they can triumph, remixes Tears For Fears’ 1985 hit “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.”
A music video for “The World Is Yours To Take” will be shot in Qatar during the World Cup while remixes featuring artists from some of the competing countries will also be shared.
Earlier this month, not long after splitting the bill with Drake on “Staying Alive,” Lil Baby shared solo track “Detox.” In addition to the DJ Khaled/Drake cut, he’s collaborated on over a dozen other singles this year, including notable joint tracks with Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, and Nav with Travis Scott. He’s also released a string of consistently strong solo songs such as “Right On,” “In a Minute,” and “Frozen.”
