Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, it has been confirmed.

Greenwood was arrested in January this year and was subsequently released on bail. He was also suspended by United indefinitely while the investigation took place.

The 21-year-old will now be charged with the offences after evidence from Greater Manchester Police was reviewed.

The news comes on the same day that Greenwood was arrested for an alleged breach of his bail. The news comes on the same day that Greenwood was arrested for an alleged breach of his bail.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm,” said a statement from Janet Potter, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West.

“All three counts relate to the same complainant.

“Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.

“The defendant’s first court appearance will take place on Monday 17 October at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings.”

Janet Potter, from Crown Prosecution Service North West, said they had authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mr Greenwood with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The alleged rape is said to have occurred on 22 October 2021, while the alleged assault is said to have taken place last December.

The charge of controlling and coercive behaviour relates to a period of time since November 2018.

Ms Potter said the charges were made after specialist rape prosecutors reviewed of a file of evidence from police. This comes after the footballer was arrested in January after images and videos were posted online.

It is thought that Greenwood breached the conditions of his bail after contacting his alleged victim.

He faces allegations that he raped, sexually assaulted and threatened to kill a then 18-year-old student.

Greenwood is being interviewed after officers descended on his £15,000-a-month home in Bowden, Manchester, this morning, The Sun reports.

The football star’s bail was extended at a private hearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court in June.

He was later quizzed on suspicion of making threats to kill as he spent three nights in cells at a Greater Manchester police station.

Greenwood was released on conditional bail on February 2, which has been extended twice since.

However, police did not specify when it would run out after the closed court hearing in June.
