Javeria Siddique the wife to Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif has confirmed in a tweet that her husband was shot in Kenya. (Read More Here).
“I lost friend, husband and my favourite journalist [Arshad Sharif] today, as per police he was shot in Kenya.”
The real cause of death has not been verified as earlier the local police said that Sharif was shot dead by police in a case of “mistaken identity”. It said the incident took place on Sunday night along the Nairobi-Magadi highway.
Some Pakistani media outlets had initially stated that Sharif had been shot at but later said he died in an accident.
His wife’s tweet today said he was shot as she asked for privacy during this period.
The journalist who was a fierce critic of the incumbent government and the country’s military establishment, had left Pakistan earlier this year after sedition cases were registered against him in different cities.
Former prime minister Imran Khan mourned Sharif’s death saying he had payed the ultimate price for speaking the truth.
Imran called for an investigation into Sharif’s death using the journalist’s own statements as well as other evidence.
Pakistani human rights commission added that there was a long record of violent tactics against journalists which was aimed at silencing them for speaking the truth and exposing the powerful.
Kenya’s authorities are conducting more investigations into the death and legal process for repatriating his body has commenced.
