The UNHCR has urged Malaysia to stop forcefully deporting refugees back to Myanmar, noting that it has received hundreds of disturbing reports on the matter since April.

It says, in just the last two months, hundreds of Myanmar nationals were sent back against their will.

It notes that the latest incident happened last week.

“According to information received by UNHCR, an asylum-seeker from Myanmar was deported on 21 October from detention despite UNHCR interventions,” it says.

It warns that sending them back to Myanmar exposes them to harm and danger.

“People fleeing Myanmar must be allowed to seek asylum and be protected against refoulement. Myanmar nationals already abroad should not be forced to return when seeking international protection.”
