Following reported cases of drought and famine in different parts of the country, it is now emerging that some parents from Gwakimori Makwa village of Gatundu South in Kiambu County, are intentionally intoxicating their children to keep them in bed longer and make them not complain about food.

The parents are reportedly giving their children illicit brew and doses of bhang to calm them down when there is no food to eat.

Peter Kimani Kamau, a village elder says most children have been forced to drop out of school as a result of the devastating drought.

“We are disturbed by the fact that some parents are now opting to give bhang and cheap liquor to children to forget eating. Once they consume the various outlawed substances, most children end up sleeping,” Kimani says

A section of villagers say they have been forced to eat once a day just to prolong their lifespan and not not for nutritional purposes.

“We are only alive because of God, otherwise most of us have been going for a week without having put food on the table. It is the high time the government remembers us. In fact, the starvation that is here could be worse than what is in Turkana,” a villager told journalists.
