According to BBC News, the Iranian courts issued its first death sentence against one of its 15,000 detained protestors on Sunday, with many more to follow as their trial approaches.

Tehran is setting a clear example to anybody who wants to partake in future protests, with over 2,000 people expected to attend court in the coming days pertaining to their charges in the eight-week-long “riots” — one of those charges including the possible death penalty.

The protests in Iran made worldwide headlines with the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini back in September, who had fallen into a coma after being detained for not wearing her hijab in accordance with government standards. She was pronounced dead three days later. While her family has strongly alleged that police officers killed Mahsa by beating her with a baton and banging her head against a vehicle, officials say she supposedly died from “sudden heart failure” following her arrest.
