What was supposed to be a normal game for a high school basketball player turned into a heartbreaking day for her following a racist encounter with fans.




In a video tweeted by East Central High School player Asia Prudhomme, who was actually the one shooting a free throw at the time, students can be heard making monkey sounds as she stepped up to the line. She tweeted over the clip saying, “This is sad, heartbreaking and uncalled for. Can’t even play basketball without ignorance and racism in the stands. This really broke my heart, my coaches and teammates… please share this out and help us punish those involved.” Her coach, Vanessa Villareal, also shared a tweet saying how the team tried not to let the incident get the best of them: “This situation was hard. Speaking to my girls about this was hard. Our weekend was not ruined by this. Our kids grew & I wish I could show what our girls did on the bus once we discussed it. Our girls are amazing people who love each other so much! I love them for that! ”

In an interview, Prudhomme explained that, “After I saw the video, it really hit me in the soft spot. I was very shocked,” she told ABC’s @KYUVE. She added, “I wasn’t really paying attention because I was always taught to ignore the students, focus on the free throw,” said Prudhomme. Athletic director Suzette Arriola also said…
