A Florida mother is behind bars after she was arrested for abusing and starving her 5-month-old son to death.

Tania McGown, 23, reportedly called police after she checked on her 5-month-old son in his crib and he was unresponsive. When the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the home, they found the unresponsive infant and transferred him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Medical staff at the hospital visibly noticed the infant was very malnourished and only weighed 7 lbs at the time of death.

Police went back to Mcgowan’s home to investigate, where they found a cluttered house with only two bottles of baby formula inside. Upon further investigation, McGowan revealed to police that she placed the baby to sleep at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10 and didn’t check on him until midnight. She said the baby appeared to be asleep, so she went to bed. When she checked on the baby again at 2 p.m. the next day, she said the baby was unresponsive and cold to the touch.

Officers also spoke with the apartment managers and learned that they had a surveillance video of McGowan aggressively beating the infant inside the apartment’s clubhouse. She was reportedly slamming the victim against furniture, putting blankets over the head and continuously slapping the victim’s head.

Police discovered that McGowan didn’t originally have custody of the baby, but only gained it once the father moved to Texas. McGowan also admitted that she noticed the baby getting smaller, but she thought he was just growing in length. McGowan was arrested and charged. She is being held on a $500,003 bond for child abuse and another $1,000,003 for child neglect..
