An 82-year-old Alabama woman was arrested for not paying a $77.80 trash bill and the arresting officer was literally laughing at her as he put her in cuffs!
According to Fox 8, Martha Louis Menefield reportedly owed the $77 bill after she didn’t pay the garbage service bill that covered the months of June, July and August. She was arrested at her home on Nov. 28. Naturally, the community became outraged once they learned of the arrest, claiming that they were attempting to criminalize people over something small.

City officials claim that the arrest only came after multiple attempts to get Ms. Menefield to pay the bill. Apparently, code enforcement officers attempted to contact her several times and left a door notice at her home. After she did not appear at a September court date for the citation, an arrest warrant for “Failure to Pay-Trash was issued.”

Valley Police Chief Mark Reynolds said in the statement that officers were required to arrest her after a warrant was issued. “[She] was treated respectfully by our officers in the performance of their duties and was released on a bond as prescribed by the violation,” Reynolds said.

Video footage has now been released of the arrest, and though she was handled with care, the officer was laughing the whole time as they arrested her. Menefield, in disbelief, complied with the officers, but was still very shocked that she was getting arrested. “The law is the law,” the officer is heard saying.

She was charged with a misdemeanor offense of “failure to pay solid waste fees.” Luckily, Ms. Menefield didn’t stay behind bars and was released on bond as soon as she was booked.
