Minister of Education Dr Douglas Letsholathebe says that teachers who hold diplomas will be phased out of primary and secondary schools in favour of those with degrees.
Justifying the move, Letsholathebe mentions that diploma holding teachers no longer serve the needs of the education system as per studies conducted.
“Teacher training studies have pointed towards the need to cease training teachers at diploma level. These studies posited that diploma programmes for teachers no longer serve the needs of the education system. My Ministry is therefore committed to cease diploma training level for teachers as it has been echoed in the recently approved General Education and Assessment Framework which has called for phasing out of diploma qualifications in favour of degree qualifications for teachers at primary and secondary education levels,” he said.
