Shikwambana was attached to the Donald Frazer Hospital in Thohoyandou while his wife was also a doctor at the Provincial Hospital in Polokwane.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said Dr Mainfred Mphikeleli Shikwambana, 35, who was employed at the Donald Fraser Hospital in Thohoyandou, allegedly killed his 32-year-old wife, Dr Tshimangadzo Muofhe.

Muofhe was employed at the Pietersburg Hospital in Polokwane. “The incident happened at Thornhill Estate in Polokwane on 27 March. The bodies were found by a family member who arrived from Vembe in the afternoon.

“Preliminary police investigations revealed that the couple fought earlier in the day and [again in] the afternoon. Muofhe was allegedly shot dead by her husband, who later turned the gun on himself.”

Mojapelo said the motive for the shooting was unknown at this stage, but domestic violence could not be ruled out.

The police have opened a murder and inquest docket. “Shikwambana, before his permanent appointment, while acting as a clinical manager at Donald Fraser Hospital, turned the hospital around from leading in maternal death in the Vhembe District to recording zero during that tenure.

“… he continued sustaining his excellent performance in clinical governance, leading to us giving him the responsibility to act as the overall head of the institution just this past month.”

Ramathuba said Muofhe would be missed by her colleagues and patients in the obstetrics and gynaecology department at Pietersburg Hospital for her dedication and commitment to protecting pregnant women and their unborn children. “The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage but domestic violence cannot be ruled out.”

Limpopo health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba said the department was saddened by the couple’s deaths, describing it as a blow to the medical fraternity. “His wife, on the other hand, will be missed by her colleagues and patients for her dedication and commitment when it comes to protecting pregnant women and their unborn children.”

Ramathuba expressed her heartfelt condolences to the couple’s family, friends and patients, saying that “death has once more stolen the best among us”. Ramathuba said Dr Mphikeleli Shikwambana, prior his permanent appointment, served for two years as an Acting Clinical Manager for Donald Fraser Hospital, where he managed to turn the hospital around from leading in maternal death in the Vhembe district to recording zero during that tenure.

The MEC said on the other hand, his wife Dr Tshimangadzo Muofhe will be missed by her colleagues and patients in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of Pietersburg hospital for her dedication and commitment when it comes to protecting pregnant women and their unborn children.

“Death has once more stolen the best amongst us, and on behalf of the health department, we send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, colleagues, and patients of the deceased, and may their departed souls rest in peace,” Ramathuba said.
