Jodie Turner-Smith confirms to us that Kogonada (‘After Yang’) is directing episodes of ‘STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE’.

It looks like Star Wars is about to get a bit artsy as filmmaker Kogonada is rumored to direct some episodes of Star Wars: The Acolyte. I’ve heard of Kogonada (After Yang, Pachinko) but have not seen his work. I know in cinephile circles his name is spoken of with reverence. The rumor comes from Daniel RPK. However as you know he runs a Patreon, ergo you can see the news for yourself covered by another outlet below.

This is surprisingly not the first time I have heard this rumor. I saw it posted on a rumors forum with no real weight to it. It was therefore not worth looking into more until this latest claim. Daniel has hits and misses, and I would not rely on all his rumors when it comes to Star Wars. However, when it comes to directors, and crew details, his record is good. It will be interesting to see if any of the trades were sitting on this one. If so, by this evening whoever that may be will have decided to drop it.

Though if you don’t see it later, that doesn’t mean this is a false rumor. Instead perhaps there was merely no information trades were sitting on before hand. I even saw one fan of Kogonada (yes, just one name, like Madonna, or Prince, Sting, Pele, or Cher and so on and so forth) claim this is the most talented director to ever work on a Star Wars project. Now that is a bold claim, though I am in no position to comment on it. Not without seeing Kogonada’s work first.

Both Kogonada and Alex Garcia Lopez have very storied resumes in the television industry. Alex Garcia Lopez was heavily involved in the Marvel Netflix franchise, having directed episodes of Daredevil Season 3, The Punisher Season 2, and Luke Cage Season 2. Dedicated Daredevil fans should recognize Alex Garcia Lopez’s name since he directed two of season 3’s most wild sequences: the 11-minute one-take jailbreak/prison riot set piece and the church battle between Daredevil himself and Bullseye. Since that franchise came to an end, the Argentine filmmaker has continued his relationship with Netflix by directing episodes of The Witcher, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and 2021’s Cowboy Bebop.

Kogonada may boast a shorter resume in both film and TV, but it is filled with beloved gems. The South Korean filmmaker burst onto the scene with his 2017 feature directorial debut Columbus, starring John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson. His second feature After Yang, starring Colin Farrell, Justin H. Min, and Jodie Turner-Smith, was one of the most critically acclaimed independent features of last year.
