Timotheé Chalamet is set to do his own singing as Bob Dylan in a forthcoming biopic, according to director James Mangold. At a Star Wars press event in Europe, Mangold told Collider that the film is slated to begin shooting in August. “It’s such an interesting true story about such an interesting moment in the American scene,” he said. Pitchfork has contacted representatives for Chalamet and Mangold for comment.

According to Papamichael, the movie’s need for period-specific settings and costuming were proving a challenge with the current coronavirus restrictions, forcing it to be postponed. “I don’t think it’s dead, but it’s a tough one to pull off in a Covid-era because it’s all in small clubs with lots of extras in period costumes so you’ve got lots of hair and makeup,” he explained.

Mangold has previous with music biopics, having written and directed the acclaimed Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line in 2005.

The project was first reported with the title Going Electric in 2020, with Mangold and Chalamet attached to the story about Dylan’s early years in New York City. Mangold more recently said that the film will feature Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez, but he did not reveal who has been cast in those roles. The film does not yet have a release date. Mangold’s newest project, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, arrives on June 30, a day before Dylan takes the stage at the 2023 Montreux Jazz Festival.

“It’s such an amazing time in American culture and the story of a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with like two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years — first being embraced into the family of folk music in New York and then, of course, kind of outrunning them at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief,” Mangold told the outlet. “It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene.”

Mangold added that filming was likely to commence in August and that such music figures as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Joan Baez would be part of the story.

Chalamet, who was most recently seen in Bones and All, has Dune: Part Two set for release in November and Wonka hitting theaters in December. He told British Vogue last year that he has seven musical numbers in Paul King’s Wonka, which serves as a prequel to Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Dylan has been portrayed on the big screen before, most notably in the 2007 musical drama I’m Not There where various versions of him were played by the likes of Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and the late Heath Ledger.
