A cat named Oyen has been living at the capybara enclosure at Zoo Negara over the last few years, Bernama reports.
“When we first discovered him, we saw he was very friendly with the capybaras. He would eat with them,” senior zookeeper Mohd Taufik says.
“At that time, we were also feeding the capybaras bread, which the cat ate.”
The staff at the zoo are not sure when exactly Oyen moved in with the capybaras, but say that, during the Covid-19 lockdowns, they would suddenly see the orange cat during feeding times.
Zoo Negara vice president Rosly @ Rahmat Ahmat Lana told Bernama, until now, both Oyen and the capybaras have not shown any distress.
He says the animals are monitored at all times to ensure they are healthy. Bernama reports that the staff at the zoo decided to allow Oyen to continue living with the capybaras, as he seemed to get along well with them.
The staff believe that Oyen is one of the many pets that have been abandoned near Zoo Negara.

“The majority of the visitors are aware of this. They came, so many of them, just to take photos of Oyen with the capybaras,” he told Bernama.
“But they’re not always successful. If they’re lucky and come during makan (feeding) time, they’ll get their photo.”
