 “Though My heart is with Rt. Hon Wase, but my vote goes to TJ Abass” – L P rep, Ogene Victor says during Speakers voting.




Labour Party House of Reps member, Ogene Victor, voted for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Tajudeen Abbas, as the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.


He said, “My heart is with Idris Wase but my vote goes to Tajudeen Abbas.”


It’s a 3 horse race with the All Progressives Congress preferred candidate for the office, Hon. Tajudeen Abass, the immediate past deputy speaker of the House, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase and Hon. Aminu Jaji on the ballot.


The House adopted open ballot system where members easily mention to the electoral officer and the deputy clerk to the national assembly, Barr. Kamura Ogunlana the candidate of their choice by voice.


It’s done on state-by-state basis and on alphabetical order. Tajudeen Abbas has defeated Idris Wase and Sani Jaji to become the new speaker of the house of representatives. 


Abbas secured the highest number of votes. Outgoing deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Idris Wase has said that his intention to run for the speakership of the incoming 10th assembly was to evolve a virile and truly independent legislature.


Wase’s promise was contained in his 10 point agenda he me publically unveiled while declaring his intention to run for for the office.


He said that should he win the election expected to be conducted on the inauguration of the 10th national assembly on June 13, his administration will focus on general orientation and image rebranding of the national assembly; ensuring a true people’s parliament; creating an efficient and innovative parliament; approaching nation building as a joint task irrespective of the political affiliation, tribe or religion; strong and independent parliament; law and order and strong legislative oversight.
