Lionel Messi’s goal for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) against Benfica in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League was selected as the best goal of the tournament this season.
Messi scored a curler against Benfica in Portugal as the game between the two sides ended in a 1-1 stalemate. It was a great effort from the Argentine. However, the consensus notion from the fans is that there were better goals.
Messi’s recent move to Inter Miami has been a topic of discussion among football fans. According to The Miami Herald, the deal between Messi and Inter Miami is valued between $125 million and $150 million over the entire length of the 2 and half year contract. Messi has previously won four Champions League titles with FC Barcelona in 2005/06, 2008/09, 2010/11, and 2014/15.
Lionel Messi has won the goal of the tournament award in the UEFA Champions League for the 2022/23 season. He scored the goal for Paris Saint-Germain against Benfica on 6 October 2022. The goal was a fabulous curving shot which went right into the net without even touching the goal. But the goal was not enough as PSG could not manage to win the game and it ended in a 1-1 draw.
In Messi’s recent season with PSG, he featured in 41 matches across competitions and scored 21 goals along with 16 impressive assists. He had the most assists in this season of the Ligue 1. However, on June 3, he played his last game for PSG and announced his move to the United States where he would feature for Inter Miami.
One fan expressed that opinion, writing on Twitter:
“Rodri robbed.”
Another wrote:
“it’s the 2019 and 2021 balon dor’s all over again.”
It was Messi’s last season in the Champions League as the Argentina captain will start a new chapter in his career next at the MLS club Inter Miami. PSG were eliminated from the round of 16 by Bayern Munich in 2022-23. However, Lionel Messi still managed to win the Goal of the Tournament award.
