On “The Idol,” Da’Vine Joy Randolph brings a rare bit of heart to the much-discussed show. Playing Destiny, Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) manager, the actor portrays one of the only stabilizing forces surrounding the sexualized pop star who has been wrapped up in a dangerous world, led by wannabe musician and cult leader Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye).
Randolph was hand-picked by “Idol” co-creator Sam Levinson after the “Euphoria” creator took over the show during a complete overhaul in which he shot it again, after an initial version helmed by Amy Seimetz was completely scrapped, Randolph says. Controversy began before the show even premiered, with a Rolling Stone article that claimed production on “The Idol” had gone “disgustingly off the rails” and that Levinson’s version played like “twisted torture porn.”
So, of course, the question on everyone’s mind now is: will the show get another season? The show hemorrhaged viewers after its premiere, but if enough people hate-watch it could be enough to convince HBO to give The Idol another chance. Whether you’re watching each week for the drama, or would rather watch anything else but The Idol, here’s what we know about its chances for a second season.
With only five episodes in the first season, The Idol’s time in HBO’s coveted 9pm slot (which Succession just exited in a blaze of glory) has been short-lived. Still, with every episode comes new clips of The Weeknd’s bad acting, or a questionable plot point the Internet can’t help but talk about, like a weird sex scene, a weird abuse scene, or random character who kind of comes out of nowhere. It makes those five weeks feel much, much longer than they really are.
Earlier this week, Deadline reported that what was thought to be a six episode first season for the show would only be five. On the same day, longtime conservative media watchdog the Parents Television and Media Council said in a statement, “HBO should run far from this Sam Levinson-produced program that glamorizes and egregiously markets extreme sexual abuse to teens by refusing to renew it for a second season.”
While some media reports had HBO canceling the show, Deadline later reported that HBO was denying reports that it had already been canceled, saying a “decision on a second season of The Idol has not been determined.”
Would Depp be up for another season? She called the show “the most fun” she’s ever had on a project. And it was rewarding to boot, she told Vogue.
