CAUSE OF DEATH? South African series writer, Teboho Mahlatsi, confirmed dead.
Few people on Facebook users are saying Teboho Mahlatsi died peacefully in his sleep.
He was the co-creator & director of the iconic show, Yizo Yizo. He was also part of the creation of various Bomb Productions projects like Isibaya, Ayeye & Shaka iLembe. “It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of filmmaker and producer,” the statement read.
The Mahlatsi family have also asked for privacy during these trying times to mourn their loved one.
“In lieu of personal condolences, the family kindly requests prayers and that they be given privacy to mourn and come to terms with the tragic loss.”
Mahlatsi is known for producing Yizo Yizo which aired from 1999 to 2004.
The production is currently streaming on Netflix. Mahlatsi’s other works include the short film Portrait of a Young Man Drowning for which he won the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in 1999, For Love and Broken Bones, Isibaya and Sekali le Meokgo (Meokgo and the Stickfighter).
Mahlatsi was also a company co-director at Bomb Productions, responsible for the Mzansi Magic drama series, Shaka iLembe. According to the company website Mahlatsi was presented the Tribute entertainment achiever of the Year award by President Thabo Mbeki, and in 2018, he was honoured for his groundbreaking work in the audiovisual and creative field at the USIBA Awards hosted by the Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
In a 2010 TEDxSoweto talk, Mahlatsi shared why he makes movies. “I’m like Brenda Fassie of films. I want to entertain. I want to make films for that kid who went to the bioscope like I did. I make films that first and foremost say something about my own environment and myself as a fan of cinema,” he said
