James Gunn says Superman Legacy will not show Superman’s origin story
“We’ve seen [it] enough”. James Gunn’s vision for Superman: Legacy centers on exploring Superman’s heritage and how it shapes his identity and choices. Gunn expressed his intention to emphasize Superman’s aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents in informing the character’s development. However, while the movie will delve into Superman’s legacy, it will not serve as an origin story. Gunn confirmed this in a statement on his Bluesky Social account, asserting that audiences have already witnessed Superman’s origin enough in previous films.
The ball is currently rolling on Superman: Legacy, a new film written and directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. Last week, the Internet was shaken with the news that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been cast as Legacy’s version of Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane, and there’s a lot of hype surrounding their future performances. In a recent comment on Bluesky Social, Gunn teased one element that might not necessarily be part of Legacy’s narrative — Superman’s origin story. A fan asked Gunn to homage the opening of All-Star Superman (which he has cited as an inspiration for the film) in Legacy, a sequence that shows Krypton’s explosion and baby Kal-El’s pod landing in Kansas.
In previous Superman films, such as Man of Steel, multiple actors portrayed different stages of Clark Kent’s life, including his younger years in Smallville. However, in Superman: Legacy, James Gunn confirmed that there will be no depiction of a young Clark Kent. This decision implies that David Corenswet, the newly cast actor, will be the sole performer embodying the character in the upcoming DCU project.
