The Champ is Here: Floyd Mayweather, the Boxing Legend, Visits South Africa to Inspire the Next Generation
Retired American-African boxer Floyd Mayweather has arrived in South Africa today as part of his Motherland Tour. The 44-year-old legend, who has a record of 50 wins and zero losses, is visiting the continent to promote boxing and inspire young talent.
Mayweather landed in Johannesburg this morning after touring neighbouring Zimbabwe, where he met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and entertained crowds in a dusty soccer field. He was greeted by fans and media at the airport, where he expressed his excitement to be in Mzansi.
“I’m happy to be here in South Africa, the land of Nelson Mandela, the land of freedom fighters, the land of great people. I’m here to show love and support to the people of Africa and to share my knowledge and experience in boxing,” he said.
Mayweather’s visit to South Africa is expected to boost the profile of boxing in the country and inspire young people to pursue their dreams. He said he hopes to leave a positive impact on the continent that he considers his home.
“Africa is where I come from, it’s where my roots are. I’m proud to be African and I want to give back to my people. I want to show them that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself,” he said.
