Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Houston woman, Tierra Young Allen, who is being detained in Dubai for screaming after she was seen talking loudly at a rental car agent.
The “crime” Tierra Young Allen is charged with may surprise you.
Dubai is increasingly a vacation destination for a number of Houston women. Now, one is trying to get back to the Bayou City, but we’re told her passport has been confiscated because her mom says she’s been charged with the crime of screaming in public.
She allegedly was talking loudly at a rental car agent after the agent told her the only way to get the items she forgot in a rental car was to pay money. Women are not allowed to “scream” in Dubai.
In the face of this intimidating situation, Allen allegedly raised her voice in response to the agent’s behavior. Unfortunately, what may seem like a normal reaction in some circumstances proved to be a serious offense in Dubai, where raising one’s voice in public is strictly prohibited, particularly for women. Consequently, Allen was charged for screaming in public, a crime that carries the possibility of prison time, fines, and deportation if she is convicted.
The case has attracted attention and concern, with community activist Quanell X stepping in to highlight the stark contrast in legal systems between Dubai and the United States. While such incidents may be seen as minor misunderstandings elsewhere, Dubai’s legal system is rooted in theocracy and has strict enforcement of cultural norms and customs.
The situation has become a source of distress for Allen’s family, with her mother expressing anxiety and sleepless nights over her daughter’s well-being. The young woman’s passport has been confiscated, and she is currently under a travel ban, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“It also could result in prison time. So it’s very scary,” explains Allen’s mom Tina Baxter who says the trip turned terrifying for her daughter Tierra Young Allen when she was a passenger in a friend’s rental car, and they got into an accident there in Dubai.
Baxter says when her daughter went to the rental car company to retrieve her ID, credit card, and other items left in the rental it didn’t go well.
