Legendary music superstar Sheryl Crow publicly destroyed MAGA country singer Jason Aldean for releasing a horrifyingly fascist song about shooting people if they disrespect cops, burn the flag, or try to confiscate Republicans’ guns.
Buckle up, this one’s a beaut…
Platinum country star Jason Aldean — an outspoken right-winger who spent New Year’s Eve with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago — ignited controversy recently by releasing a song called “Try That in a Small Town.”
Among other things, the song is aggressively pro-gun, anti-BLM, and fetishizes the idea of carrying out vigilante justice against liberals and protestors. Some critics have gone so far as to say that the song glorifies lynching.
“‘Try That In A Small Town,’ for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief. Because they were our neighbors, and that was above any differences. My political views have never been something I’ve hidden from, and I know that a lot of us in this country don’t agree on how we get back to a sense of normalcy where we go at least a day without a headline that keeps us up at night. But the desire for it to — that’s what this song is about.”
CMT has dropped from its rotation the music video for Jason Aldean’s new single, “Try That in a Small Town,” after just three days of airplay — and in the wake of backlash that arose over the weekend online.
Aldean in turn tweeted that any claims that the song’s lyrics are “pro-lynching” and/or anti-BLM are “not only meritless, but dangerous.”
CMT did not give a reason for the music video’s removal, our sister site Billboard reports. Meanwhile, Aldean took to his social media Tuesday afternoon to defend the song from its many critics, taking a much softer tone in his messaging than he does in the hostile single itself, or a video that projects images of demonstrators onto a courthouse that was the site of a famous lynching.
“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous,” Aldean wrote.
He continued, “There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it- and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage -and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music- this one goes too far. As so many pointed out, I was present at Route 91-where so many lost their lives- and our community recently suffered another heartbreaking tragedy. NO ONE, including me, wants to continue to see senseless headlines or families ripped apart.”
Aldean tried to paint the song as taking a positive attitude on small towns, and downplayed the belligerent threats to outsiders that make up most of the lyrics, not to mention the stock footage of protesters that takes up a good portion of the video’s running time.
Now, as Billboard reports, CMT has pulled the video. The network, which premiered “Try That In A Small Town” Friday and had it in heavy rotation over the weekend, has not given a reason for taking it off the air.
Worst of all, the music video shows videos of protests projected on a courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee where 18-year-old African American Henry Choate was lynched in 1927. Real subtle stuff Jason.
Sheryl Crow — a far more talented musician than Aldean — heard his offensive song and spoke out with a powerful message.
Crow retweeted a message condemning Aldean for writing a song about shooting people despite the fact that he himself was present and on stage during the tragic Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017.
To the retweeted criticism, Crow added her own thoughts. She tagged Aldean and let loose—
“I’m from a small town. Even people in small towns are sick of violence,” wrote Crow. “There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence. You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting. This is not American or small town-like. It’s just lame”.
Country Music Television has pulled Jason Aldean’s music video ‘Try That In A Small Town’ in response to media outrage.
In the music video, Aldean calls out left-wing violence, specifically violence against law enforcement.
Apparently this is ‘controversial’ and hateful according to the left.
“Sucker punch somebody on a sidewalk, carjack an old lady at a red light. Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store. Ya think it’s cool, well, act a fool if ya like. Cuss out a cop, spit in his face. Stomp on the flag and light it up. Yeah, ya think you’re tough,” the lyrics read.
“Well, try that in a small town. See how far ya make it down the road.”
