24-year-old Nigerian international striker Victor Osimhen is set to be the hottest property in
European football this summer. The goal scoring sensation, who has scored 45 times in 75 appearances for Napoli, is attracting the attention of Europe’s football elite. Both Manchester United and Bayern Munich have been heavily scouting Osimhen, with reports indicating bids are in the offing from each club in the close season.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has made an elite level center forward his number-one priority this summer. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are also on the look out for a top striker, given that Serge Gnabry is having to be used as a makeshift number nine at present.
Why Osimhen could snub Manchester United’s advances.
The key to Osimhen’s next destination is not reported to be the Nigerian’s personal ambition.
Instead, it’s likely to be the preference of his girlfriend, Stephanie. It was recently revealed that his girlfriend was born and bred in Germany. Reports suggest she is anxious for her daughter to grow up within reach of her loved ones. Osimhen is also open to playing in Germany’s Bundesliga again, having spent time there with Wolfsburg as a relative rookie.
As for Osimhen’s immediate ambitions, both he and Napoli are a matter of days away from being able to celebrate their first Italian scudetto since 1989/90.
After 30 Serie A games played, Napoli are still 14 points clear of second-placed Lazio.
The Naples club is priced as short as -9000 with FanDuel Sportsbook to become 2022/23
Serie A champions. This is a trusted operator, ranked within the top five sites licensed in the US according to OddsChecker, which ranks brands based on the caliber of their bonus structures, the strength of their licenses and the competitiveness of their odds.
A 14-point lead with just 24 points to play for underlines why the sportsbooks have all but handed the title to Gli Azzurri.
Osimhen will be heralded a hero for bringing a scudetto trophy to the port city. Osimhen has played a key role in Napoli’s European campaign as well as its domestic campaign. The Nigerian has scored four goals for Napoli in the UEFA Champions’ League, proving to onlooking suitors that he is the man for the big occasion.
One of the most exciting aspects of Osimhen’s style is that he’s proven capable of scoring alltypes of goals this term. The Nigerian has been lethal with both feet and has an impressive spring to underpin his aerial prowess. Osimhen also has a significant five assists to his name, demonstrating that he’s also more than just a poacher, helping to fashion chances for his teammates.
Osimhen’s journey to the top of European football
It’s not been an easy route to football stardom for Osimhen. Born in Lagos, Osimhen was brought up in the Olusosun community and idolized Chelsea front man Didier Drogba throughout his formative years.
Osimhen was part of the famed Lagos-based Ultimate Strikers Academy, which joined forces with German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg as the team’s inaugural international cooperation partner. Osimhen was given the opportunity to train with Wolfsburg and he
caught the eye sufficiently to be offered a professional contract. Osimhen had bagged ten goals in seven games during the U17 World Cup in 2015, which also put him on the radar of
English club Tottenham.
Osimhen then made 14 senior appearances for Wolfsburg between 2017 and 2019. In the 2018/19 campaign, he was loaned out to Belgian side Charleroi, who took a chance on him when fellow Belgium teams Club Brugge and Zulte Waregem rejected him due to the malaria he had suffered with for most of the summer.
That didn’t stop Osimhen from making a big impression that year, notching 12 goals in 25 appearances.
Bizarrely, Charleroi activated their option to buy Osimhen from Wolfsburg but then promptly sold him to French Ligue 1 side Lille. After another strong year with Lille, notching almost a goal every other game in the French top flight, he sealed his €70 million switch to Napoli, making him the most expensive African signing in history.
There is a widespread feeling that this €70 million figure could be dwarfed by his next big money move in the coming months.
