A recent video of female students at Kereri Girls High School in Kisii County, lining up to have their hair shaved has sparked discussions and debates among Kenyans online.

The school requires all students to shave their heads, a policy that has been met with criticism by some who believe it is not necessary and could harm the students’ mental and physical health.

“Once again I welcome you to Kereri Girls. For those girls who are here for the registration process but have long hair, the school’s policy is that you must have your hair shaved. We have barbers at specific locations to take care of that,” said a man in the video, giving guidelines on the admission process.

The video has garnered mixed reactions on social media, with some criticizing the policy and others defending it.

“Students shouldn’t be shaved bald with the hot sun. The hair protects the skin. Sad that we still encourage this nonsense,” said Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai.

What is good for the goose, can sometimes not be good for the gander, as is the case when pictures shared online of Form one students reporting to Kereri Girls’ High School were spotted lining up to be shaved causing a frenzy.

Still, on Kereri, Form one students joining Kereri Girls’ High School in Kisii on Monday, February 6 were told by the announcer that they had to shave their hair. The announcer was heard saying it was against the school rules for their students to have long hair. Those who hadn’t complied were lucky as there was a barber available to do what was necessary. The form one student with long hair queued, as they awaited their turn.
