Theo James trends following scene from Season 2 of ‘The White Lotus.’
The White Lotus Season 2 premiered on HBO tonight, introducing us to a (mostly) new cast of insufferably rich resort guests and the locals caught in their crossfire. However, it wasn’t a wholly new landscape. In addition to the return of Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) and Greg (Jon Gries), writer and director Mike White brought many of the hallmarks that made The White Lotus Season 1 so popular — including those uncomfortable nude scenes. The White Lotus Season 2 premiere episode, titled “Ciao,” sees newcomer Theo James completely drop trow in front of Aubrey Plaza‘s flustered character. It’s a moment that not only recalls the awkward way Season 1 introduced Steve Zahn’s Mark Mossbacher, but also complicates an already thorny relationship.
Season 2 of HBO’s The White Lotus takes place in a White Lotus resort nestled amid the ancient Roman ruins and fabulous Renaissance villas of Sicily. Spoiled rich boy Cameron (Theo James) and his beautiful and bubbly wife Daphne (Meghann Fahy) have invited Cameron’s college roommate Ethan (Will Sharpe) and his far more prickly wife Harper (Aubrey Plaza) to Sicily for a lavish getaway. Harper immediately bristles in Cameron and Daphne’s company. The self-made attorney mistrusts the golden couple’s supposedly perfect marriage and believes that Cameron only invited them because Ethan just sold his tech start up for a vast fortune.
Because Cameron’s luggage has been lost en route to Italy, Ethan offers to loan his old college buddy one of his pairs of swim trunks. Cameron then accompanies Harper back to her room to pick up said swimsuit. Harper, meanwhile, wants to find her sunscreen. While Harper is in her bathroom looking for the SPF, Cameron follows her in and immediately takes off his pants and underwear. We see Harper’s perspective, which is a clear view of Cameron’s bare butt as well as a tease of his genitals in the bathroom mirror. Harper freezes, unsure of how to take this act.
Aubrey Plaza dryly explained that the reason the usually outspoken Harper didn’t say anything to Cameron was that “I just had to follow the script and say my lines.” Nevertheless, Plaza though it was “a fun scene to shoot.”
“It was the first private moment, you know, that Harper and Cameron have. And it’s loaded. It just feels very loaded,” Plaza said. “You’ve already seen them butt heads, so you’re just like, ‘What is gonna happen when they’re behind closed doors?’” Cameron gets naked behind closed doors, apparently.
The 37-year-old said of the scene: ‘The initial version we shot was way too much, so we did a more subtle version. They toned it down. It’s funny because we’re all kind of naked a lot because it’s a holiday show. It felt natural.’
James is aware he is gaining a reputation for appearing nude and jokes that he has a clause in his contracts stipulating he is ‘not allowed to do anything without being completely naked’.
His career took off in suitably raunchy style – his first big role was as Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk in Downton Abbey, who died of a heart attack after a romp with Lady Mary Crawley, played by Michelle Dockery.
With a career now thriving, he is now part of the ‘new Primrose Hill set’ – a group of actors, who include Claire Foy and Matt Smith, who live in the trendy North London enclave once the playground of Jude Law and the Gallagher brothers of the original 1990s set.
James – full name Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis – is married to Irish actress Ruth Kearney, who played the leading role as Jess Parker in Primeval. They met at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
In 2015, James, who grew up in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, became the brand ambassador for Hugo Boss fragrances for men. A year later the actor – the son of a business consultant and NHS worker – travelled to Greece with refugee agency UNHCR, where he met Syrians who had fled the civil war in their country. He has since been a supporter of refugees’ rights.
The series’ second season will not see the return of any of these actors, save for Jennifer Coolidge (thank god). That said, the success of the first season has opened the door for a new cast of characters, equally as scene-stealing as their predecessors. Keep reading to see who’s checking in to White Lotus: Sicily.
