77-year-old Charles Count has been charged with endangering the welfare of children after last week’s incident, which saw his five-year-old daughter running after a group of kids with a firearm. (Read More Here).
Law enforcement officers were called to the scene on September 18 in Crawford Village, Pennsylvania, after a call from a concerned parent stressed how the young girl in question was chasing after adolescent minors with a gun in clear sight.
Following the scary ordeal, Counts, who’s previously been diagnosed with dementia, spoke to police, telling them that the girl — seen in the viral video clip — is his daughter, who he believes had taken the gun from his drawer without his knowledge. While he had no recollection of his daughter being anywhere near the gun, he claimed the firearm was not loaded when she ran outside with it and trailed after other kids in the neighborhood.
Counts’ son, James, has since issued a public apology, in an exclusive interview with Pittsburgh’s Action News, saying he’s fully aware that the children were “petrified” by his five-year-old sister’s actions. “My dad is 77 years old, he has dementia, he’s a diabetic and he loves that girl more than he loves himself […] You know, he treats her like she’s a 15-year-old when she’s 15 — and he doesn’t understand, at his age, what’s really going on.”
