The US Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and wiped out the constitutional right to abortion, issuing a historic ruling likely to render the procedure largely illegal in half the country and further polarize a deeply divided nation.

The court voted along ideological lines. All six Republican-appointed justices voted to uphold Mississippi’s ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy, and five said they would go further and overturn Roe and the constitutional right it established. Chief Justice John Roberts said he would have stopped short of toppling Roe completely.

Hillary Clinton wrote: “Most Americans believe the decision to have a child is one of the most sacred decisions there is, and that such decisions should remain between patients and their doctors.

“Today’s Supreme Court opinion will live in infamy as a step backward for women’s rights and human rights. Join me today in re-committing to help people access the care they need—and win elections at every level—to protect reproductive freedom for everyone in America.”

Maxine Waters wrote: “Today, I stand in solidarity with the 36 MILLION women being stripped of their right to decide what is best for themselves. We WILL keep fighting!

#BansOffOurBodies. As a Member of Congress, I’m proud to have voted to protect abortion access. Today’s SCOTUS decision makes it even more clear: we need federal protections for reproductive health.

I am committed to continuing this FIGHT: in Congress, in the streets, and at the Ballot Box!”

Barack Obama wrote: “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”
