The producer — who’s cranked out hits for Future, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, Migos, Travis Scott, Drake, Kanye West and 21 Savage, just to name a few — received the tragic news this weekend after his mother’s body was discovered by cops just outside of the Atlanta area.
Sources connected to the investigation tell TMZ … MB’s mom, Leslie Joanne Wayne, appears to have been murdered by her spouse — not Metro’s father — who then killed himself. We’re told this happened Friday night, but further details are hazy.
A representative for Metro Boomin confirmed Wayne’s passing to Fox 3 Now and said the family asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Per TMZ, Wayne encouraged her son to pursue music at a young age, and often drove him from the family’s St. Louis hometown to Atlanta so that he could collaborate with other hip-hop artists. In a 2020 Mother’s Day tweet, Metro Boomin described his mother as his “best friend” and the “wisest and strongest person I know.”
Metro Boomin first appeared on the Billboard Artist 100 in 2017 and peaked at No. 4 on the list in October 2020. He has appeared on the Hot 100 chart 31 times, with two Top 10 hits in 2020: “Runnin” with 21 Savage (No. 9) and “Mr. Right Now” with 21 Savage featuring Drake (No. 10).
Artists reacted to the reports of his mother’s death on social media on Sunday, with Rae Sremmurd sending “prayers to Metro Boomin and his family” in a tweet and and Juicy J writing, “Prayers up for Metro Boomin.” “Prayers up for my brother @MetroBoomin,” Mike Will Made-It tweeted.
