Recall that on December 24, 2021, it was reported that no fewer than 8 people were trapped after a mine collapse in Abimbo village, Siaya County.
Six people were successfully rescued, but a boda boda rider, Tom Okwach, wasn’t. He has been under the soil for over days now.
Siaya County Chief Officer in charge of Governance Joseph Omondi, who visited the site, said the soil at the gold mine was loose and was therefore endangering the lives of rescuers.
“We’re trying to get a winch because the work of the excavator was to open up the ground,” said Omondi.
According to reports, the Family of Tom Okwach is still optimistic that the body of their son will be retrieved from the collapsed mine in Abimbo, barely 37 days since the mine collapsed.
